AVG PC TuneUp is a PC system optimization app that promises to provide more storage space, faster speeds, longer battery life and less crashing – all with a set-and-forget interface that works automatically. With 17 tools, it’s a full suite of Windows utility software. AVG also promises it can restore your PC to its original speed. While it didn’t produce impressive improvements to our test PC, it did improve boot-up speed dramatically.
For each PC cleaner in our review, we employed the program’s optimization tools on a test computer. We used PCMark 8 to benchmark performance both before and after optimization. The benchmark tests measured word and data processing, graphics processing, web browsing and video chat quality. We also benchmarked the boot-up speed and evaluated the diagnostic consistency of the app.
Overall, AVG PC TuneUp improved our test PC by 10.74 percent on average, which was above average, though not significant enough to be noticeable in day-to-day usage. In fact, none of the apps in our tests produced noticeable improvements. Even the best PC system utility software we tested, Glary Utilities Pro, which made a 12.63 percent improvement, failed to make the computer faster. The computer was ranked in the bottom 12 percent of computers that have run the same benchmarking tests both before and after optimization.
The app improved data and word processing by 5.03 percent and graphics processing by 5.43 percent. However, it only improved web browsing by 0.04 percent and video chat quality by 0.23 percent. So, if your computer is slow, don’t expect any miracles.
Ease of Use
Where this app really shines is the startup optimizer, which improved the boot-up speed by 45.96 percent. While the overall performance increase isn’t noticeable, this improvement is definitely noticeable. For example, if your boot-up speed is one minute, this is an improvement of over 26 seconds. That said, we were able to improve the startup speed by 42 percent simply by using the Windows startup manager tool. So, while the improvement is noticeable, you can achieve similar results without the software. By comparison, WinZip System Utilities Suite slowed our computer’s bootup speed by over 124 percent.
AVG PC TuneUp didn’t recover any storage, which was disappointing because we left the recycle bin full before optimization. For an app that promises to free-up storage, it failed to deliver in our tests.
The software has a sleek interface that looks great, but that doesn’t always translate to ease of use. In our evaluation, it received a C for the overall ease of use, which means that novice users might feel lost as they navigate through all the tools. In addition, the installation received a D+ because it caused our test computer to crash several times. The fact that the software can put such a strain on your system gave us reason question it.
Despite 17 optimization tools, there aren’t many advanced tools that you can make use of with AVG PC TuneUp. It lacks a system backup and restore tool, security and privacy optimization and file encryption. It does, however, have a file recovery tool, which helps you un-delete files. Unfortunately, this only works if the files are still in the recycle bin. If you’ve emptied the recycle bin, the file recovery tool won’t help.
Help & Support
AVG PC TuneUp comes with three licenses, which means you can install it onto three computers. The company provides support through phone and live chat, but not email. You can also access a FAQs page for quick answers to common issues.
AVG PC TuneUp is a suite of PC system utility software designed to optimize your sluggish computer, reviving it to former speeds, but you shouldn’t expect this to happen. In fact, no utility software we tested can make a slow computer fast. AVG only improved our computer by about 10 percent, which isn’t noticeable. It made dramatic improvements to the startup speed, but you can achieve similar results on your own. In addition, it didn’t recover any storage.
